IT is fair to say during this period of extreme austerity that local councils across the country are being faced with making very tough decisions on future provision of services as well as how to best protect the elderly and most vulnerable in society.
Despite this it was encouraging to hear at a recent Community Forum Meeting that Bournemouth Council has allocated in excess of £700,000 to the Local Welfare Assistance Fund in helping the worst off as well as people previously eligible for crisis loans and community care grants.
The Government has set Local Authorities a real challenge in creating and delivering a scheme to help the elderly and most disadvantaged in society against a backdrop of ongoing and severe budget cuts. It is therefore extremely encouraging to hear that Bournemouth Council has been thinking about how to address this issue for some considerable time and is now in a position to provide vital help to those in our town who most need it.
