WITH reference to Cllr Fred Drane’s letter (‘Appalled that we have food poverty’, Letters March 4), I'm afraid these words of a councillor are the reason we have the problem.
You cannot assume this country is better than India at looking after its poor. We haven't been for decades (under all three main parties now).
It's all well and good complaining that forms are too long and need to be simple. You work for the council (either in power or opposition). If you need a simple form and it's not been done, design one yourself and push for it to be adopted – after all that is what we expect of our councillors in power and in opposition. You chose to be elected, now do something with your power.
The poor in our country suffer because of those fiddling the system and let’s be honest we all know poor people far too proud to claim anything. Please spend more time cutting fraud and distributing the money to those who genuinely need it.
There is too much talk and petty infighting by the ruling powers these days, too busy claiming their expenses and cutting the salaries of others.
As an ex-council employee, I have had enough of councillors moaning and not doing, so get off you hands sir and fight... you may even get my vote if you do.
