YOUR anonymous correspondent in their letter ‘This pension money came from salary’ (Dec 31) is under some misapprehension if they believe their contributions towards their police pension was adequate. The government’s own statistics show the annual cost of taxpayer contributions to police pensions has doubled, rising from £951 million in 1995/96 to £1.9 billion in 2009/10. The second comment I made about the Police Federation is described on its own website as a ‘sort of trade union’.
It fulfils most of the role of a trade union as your correspondent correctly stated, but should not get involved in party politics. To answer that, you need only read why I was flabbergasted at statements that I believe contradicted that political impartiality by Dorset Police representatives. For the record, I harbour no ill feelings over what I would regard as trivia and will continue to support Dorset Police in combating crime – it’s rife in Upton.
