IN the past few weeks persons known to me have had their driver’s licences renewal applications delayed due to circumstances relating to eye problems.

They willingly and honestly stated these facts in their applications, in both cases operations being successful with a consultant’s report.

Because of this and her honesty the DVLA in the first instance required further examination from her consultant which made it necessary for her to have a driving test every year. She had to wait several weeks before approval.

The second instant was the person had both cataracts removed from her eyes making her eyesight next to perfect with a consultant’s report pronouncing this OK.

Again she was honest and mentioned this on her application.

They replied by saying that she would have to wait a possible 90 days before she received her new licence. Because of this she is confined to being house-bound.

Both these persons mentioned are very competent drivers without blemished licences.

The DVLA, in my opinion, are discriminating against the elder driver and not, incriminating enough against some disgraceful drivers on our roads and who, when caught, get a slap on the wrist.
