EX-COUNCILLOR Jacky Harris says of the surf reef that it was not a waste of money because we now have something that we would not have had otherwise (Daily Echo, November 12). Exactly – we now have a pile of sandbags that cost £3million.

How can she say that it was not a waste of taxpayers’ money?

Okay, I accept that things have changed on the seafront but surely the businesses that opened down there did so on the expectation that they would draw customers from the reef, which does not appear to have happened.

What has also happened to the surf pods that were built? Have they been sold yet?

This statement from Jacky Harris is just another example of grandiose schemes from past and present councillors who, when they go wrong, refuse to take responsibility for them.
