SIXTY years ago my family contributed and were involved with building Druitt Hall Old People’s Welfare Centre and permanent Christchurch Coronation Memorial.
It was on land given to the people of Christchurch by Charlotte Druitt.
The council now plan to demolish this despite a great public outcry.
Five years ago, myself and my pop-in group that I ran donated money to the fund for a modern replacement for this hall.
But the project stalled due to insufficient funds.
Now a generous local benefactor has offered £1.5 million to build a new hall, but was told there is no need for a community hall.
Druitt Hall has been in constant use for nearly 60 years in a perfect location for community use.
But bookings are now being restricted and the hall run-down.
What’s going on here?
