HOW quickly the council responded to the bus accident, to inform everyone that the stretch of road was perfectly safe.

How is that possible when at least three vehicles have come to grief there in the past few years.

As a retired HGV driver who used that stretch of road frequently, I dreaded meeting another HGV or a bus coming in the opposite direction, as on rounding the bend, just a bit further up they would drift out to the centre so as not to hit their nearside mirrors on the branches of the trees opposite.

This action would force another large vehicle to move to its nearside and at that point where the ground is soft, once the nearside front wheel goes off the tarmac there is no hope of recovery and the driver becomes a passenger in his/her own vehicle.

A few years ago there was a sign put up by the council saying work would start in May, but did not say which year!

Maybe a short length of crash barrier or high kerbing like the ones at Durweston bridge would help or make the road wider at this part of the road.

It is fair to say that the council do cut the hedges back for car users but do tend to forget that HGV mirrors are higher up and when they have been broken it could cause a further accident.
