PROMOTER Matt Ford has revealed that Poole Pirates plan to honour superfan Scott Mitchell’s global triumph.

Darts ace Mitchell won the BDO World Championship on Sunday with a thrilling 7-6 victory over Lakeside legend Martin Adams.

The 44-year-old had Pirates’ skull and crossbones logo emblazoned on his left shirt sleeve for the duration of the BBC and BT Sport-televised tournament.

And the Bransgore thrower’s ardent support for the Elite League champions was mentioned in commentary during the final – as around 2.5million TV viewers watched on.

Ford feels it would be apt to recognise both the magnitude of Mitchell’s achievement and his “commitment and passion” for speedway.

The Pirates chief told the Daily Echo: “I’d like to bring Scott down for our first league meeting of the year and present him to the crowd.

“Perhaps he could lead us out – it would be nice to have a world champion lead the Pirates out for the 2015 campaign.

“Scott is a tremendous guy. Of his own accord, he started wearing the club emblem on his sleeve and I thank him greatly for that because it has become a talking point in many forms of media.

“He has also given quotes about nerves and how he knows how riders must feel before heat 15, all of which has been great publicity.

“Scott showed his commitment and passion to our sport and the club and we in turn would like to honour him back.”

Mitchell has also been invited to be a guest of chairman Jeff Mostyn at Cherries’ Sky-televised Championship clash with Watford a fortnight tomorrow.

Ford added that he expected Pirates’ 2015 Elite League fixtures to be released soon – possibly within the next week.
