PIRATES new boy Benji Compton vowed to fulfil his potential at Wimborne Road and insisted his troublesome wrist would not halt his charge.

The 27-year-old reserve, who makes his Poole debut at home to Swindon tonight, only returned to action a month ago from the broken scaphoid that scuppered his switch to the south coast in May.

While Compton admits his wrist still gives him occasional discomfort, he is adamant his focus must be on racing as he bids to avoid the fate suffered by axed former reserves Lee Smart, Ben Hopwood and Brendan Johnson.

Compton told the Daily Echo: “I thought the opportunity to sign for Poole had gone out of the window due to my wrist injury, but the chance has come round again so of course I’m happy about that.

“It’s still a bit sore now but you just have to get on with it. At the end of the day I’ve only got so much of the season left and it’s time to crack it.

“If you really want it, there’s no reason why you can’t keep your team spot and I’d like to think I can.

“I’ve told Matt Ford (owner) that I’m right up for it and it’s good to be joining a winning team. I’m ready for the challenge and I’m going to give it everything I’ve got.”

Currently on a 6.37-point average in the National League, Compton has not been without bike problems in 2014, but he believes he has now found a solution.

After changing the coil on his machine for Monday’s meeting against Stoke, Compton stormed to 15 points in the 56-36 triumph.

He continued: “All season my engine has been down on power and I tried everything to fix it.

“The coil is the one thing I hadn’t changed all year but I changed it on Monday and I absolutely flew.

“I was passing everyone and in heat 15 I smoked them, so that meeting definitely gave me a bit of a confidence boost.”
