FIRST-team manager Dan Draper hailed a dominant display by the Wimborne pack as the Minstermen eased their relegation fears with their first victory since the middle of January.

Wimborne had lost six of their past seven games in Southern Counties South but ended their barren run with an emphatic seven-try haul in a 41-13 win over visitors Walcot.

And Draper felt a powerful performance in the forwards had given his team the platform for victory at Leigh Park.

He told the Daily Echo: "We've had a bit of a tough time of it since Christmas so Walcot was a must-win and the boys came through it.

"Just below us, Frome had started to pick up results and were creeping up so we were focused on some sort of victory, however it came, and to score seven tries was great.

"Richard Sharp came in at number six and him, Ed Carter and Declan Foley were absolutely superb in the back-row. That was coupled with a strong performance from the pack in general – we dominated them.

"It's always good to beat teams around you and this result was even more satisfying given our recent poor form.

"Should we get a positive result against Devizes on Saturday, given how tough it has been since Christmas, that might put a bit of a smile on our face. Hopefully, we can end the season on a high."

Full-back James Mikolajewski impressed for the Minstermen with two tries and three conversions.

Draper added: "Miko hasn't been around the first team for quite a while but it was a great display from him, not only in his kicking but in his tries as well.

"He was involved in pretty much everything. He often came into the line late on and gave us that extra option. He is a very powerful runner and they couldn't live with him."

Walcot took a 10-0 lead early on but a Marcus Atkins try, converted by Mikolajewski, pulled the hosts back to within three.

Further scores from Jim Brokenshire and Mikolajewski made it 17-10 at the interval.

Following the restart, Declan Foley touched down and although Walcot added three more points of their own, a Ryan Maidment converted try took Wimborne 29-13 ahead.

Mikolajewski then grabbed his second try and Tom Chaffey rounded off the afternoon when he crossed over, with Mikolajewski's conversion flying between the uprights.

Elsewhere in the division, Dorset Dockers won 14-5 at Dorchester thanks to tries from Kingsley Agbo and Chester Clough, both converted by the latter.

In Hampshire One, Ellingham & Ringwood were beaten 29-15 by leaders Millbrook and now look set for relegation.

A try from Callum Butler and a conversion and penalty from Ali Bennett gave the Es a 10-8 lead at the break.

However, Millbrook fought back and although Dave Jones crossed for the home side, Millbrook increased their lead to 29-15 late on to deny the Es a bonus point.

Ellingham & Ringwood II defeated Dorchester II 28-22. Ben Carey, Lee McKeith, Stu Pearce, Matt Karelus touched down and Alex McGuire kicked one conversion and two penalties.
