SWANAGE & Wareham boss Keith Tomes revealed concerns after Will Corsie succumbed to a knee injury in Saturday’s 15-11 defeat at Trowbridge.

The flanker was on the receiving end of a scrag tackle in the second half – for which the Trowbridge player was sin-binned – and damaged his knee in the process.

That incident completed a frustrating away day for South West One East’s basement side after they were unable to hold on to a six-point half-time lead, with three tries in 15 second-half minutes proving crucial for the hosts.

Tomes told the Daily Echo: “Will went to ground with what looked a pretty serious knee injury and, unfortunately, he has had a couple of those before.

“As he was swung round his foot got caught in the ground and his knee went.

“We’re not sure if that could be the end of it.”

The first 15 minutes were evenly contested and Swans fly-half Phil Graves missed the chance to break the deadlock with a penalty.

However, shortly afterwards Graves slotted home to earn three points and Swans then survived a period of Trowbridge pressure close to their own line.

A series of penalties took Swans into Trowbridge territory and eventually Graves swept a penalty between the uprights to extend to 6-0 the lead.

In the final minute of the half, a last-ditch tackle prevented the home side from crossing the whitewash and Swans subsequently cleared.

However, after the break, the visitors’ lead swiftly evaporated.

A penalty took Trowbridge to within five metres and from a scrum they pushed over to score in the corner.

From kick-off, the Wiltshire side’s pack broke through the defence and scored out wide, putting them 10-6 in front.

Another push-over score, again unconverted, increased the Trowbridge advantage.

Midway through the second half, following a couple of scrums, Swans centre Matt Spencer forced his way over in the corner for an unconverted try.

The remainder of the clash was fairly even but Swans wing Pat Adkins was denied a memorable score late on when he was forced into touch just before the try line.

Swans earned a losing bonus point in defeat and Tomes added: “We should have had another couple of scores in the first half. If we had been another seven or eight points ahead it might have been different.

“They changed their tactics at half-time and went to pick-and-drive a wee bit and scored three quick tries at the start of the second half.

“We had the majority of the play after that but couldn’t convert it into points. I thought we were the better team for large parts of the game.

“Trowbridge made two or three breaks and the boys got back and made tackles, whereas five or six weeks ago they wouldn’t have done.”

Elsewhere, Swans’ second string lost 29-8 to North Dorset II in Dorset & Wilts One South while the thirds succumbed to a 46-10 defeat against Oakmeadians II in Dorset & Wilts Three South.
