SWANAGE & Wareham set up a Dorset & Wilts Cup final date with Salisbury after overcoming local rivals Wimborne 22-10 in atrocious conditions at Leigh Park.

Swans got off to a flying start from kick-off when number eight Joe Desmond gained possession and the ball went via Callum Baird to wing Charlie Rowberry who crossed under the posts.

Fly-half Charlie Parish added the extras and with little over a quarter of an hour gone, the lead became 12-0.

From a scrum, the visitors powered over the Wimborne try line with captain-for-the-day John Sheldrake claiming the score.

A James Mikolajewski penalty from 45m reduced the advantage before the break and following the resumption the hosts came out with renewed vigour.

Following an attacking lineout and a series of drives, Steve King went over for a try that was converted by Mikolajewski, reducing the lead to 12-10.

However, Swans then turned the screw and following a fine kick into the Wimborne 22, lineout ball was secured and wing forward Matt Roberts was driven over, with Parish adding the extras.

With eight minutes left, Parish made sure of victory with a penalty, securing Swanage’s path to the November 29 final.

Wimborne: Unwin, Hunt, Tinsdale, Christopher, Watson, Murphy, Carter, King, Llewellyn, Van Wyk, Long, Tarbard, Mikolajewski, Bartlett, Maltman, Mills, Wale, Thornett, Blackmore, Young, Hempstead, Hamer.

Swans: Baird, Valehei, Cottrell, Graves, Rowberry, Parish, Tomes, Sheldrake, Fielding, Wyburgh, Collins, Penney, Scott, Roberts, Desmond, Audley, Wright, Corsie, Jones.

Elsewhere, Swanage II trounced Westbury 71-5 in the cup while Swanage III were 35- 3 winners over Salisbury III, also in knockout competition.

  • POOLE lost out to higher-division East Dorset in the battle for early-season silverware as they were defeated 17-3 in the Dorset & Wilts Junior Vase final.

Dorset & Wilts Three South outfit Poole faced a tricky task at Meyrick Park against their county opponents, the current leaders of the division above.

East Dorset were first to score when Tim Root went over for an unconverted try.

In a second period in which both sides were reduced to 14 men, a penalty cut the advantage.

With 10 minutes remaining, East Dorset grabbed a crucial score when Chris Poole took a tap penalty and charged across the whitewash.

Despite Poole’s best efforts, the result was wrapped up when Matt Sadler ran in from 30 yards and the kick was converted.
