BOSS Matty Holmes believes positive momentum is with Wimborne Town as they wrapped up home advantage for the Southern League West play-offs.

A dazzling 5-0 victory over Slimbridge on Saturday meant Magpies finished third in the league and set up a home battle against Didcot Town in Wednesday’s semi-final.

And should they progress through, the final against either Evesham United or Swindon Supermarine will also be staged at Cuthbury.

Magpies have lost one of their past 19 games in all competitions on the way to making the top-three, an accomplishment Holmes described as “incredible”.

He told the Daily Echo: “We have momentum going into Wednesday. It was really important we finished off on a high, the crowd was good and we were delighted to finish the regular season well.

“The way we are on a roll with one defeat in 19 games including cups, it’s just an unbelievable run.

“Whatever happens on Wednesday, nobody can take away our third place position and we weren’t too far off Salisbury in second at the end.

“The league doesn’t lie. I think we have been the third best team and I am delighted for the boys, they have been superb all season.

“It’s an incredible achievement how these players have done in context of what Wimborne is to other teams in the league.”

Magpies took 25 minutes to open the scoring against Slimbridge before Louis Kellaway broke the deadlock, netting Wimborne’s 100th league goal of the season.

A second-half double from Toby Holmes along with strikes from Luke Holmes and Matt Oldring ensured the hosts ran out comfortable winners.

Manager Holmes added: “It was a wonderful display and a fitting way to finish the regular season.

“If we were being picky I thought we were a bit slow to get started and we missed a lot of chances in the first half.

“We went in 1-0 up and I said to the boys we just needed to keep our shape better at times. In the second half they went out and produced some wonderful football.

“It was nice to spread around the goals and Luke Burbidge was unplayable in the second half with his ability out wide.

“We have had some tough fixtures over the past month and to go unbeaten with so many games, as well as playing Salisbury and Taunton, has been incredible.

“The players have all improved as the season has gone on. With that you get success, you get higher up the league and it’s great how they have taken to how we wanted to play.”
