WIMBORNE Town manager Matty Holmes felt his side at least deserved a point from their 1-0 loss at Winchester City.

Hosts Winchester took the lead on the half hour with a goal which proved decisive in the Southern South & West contest.

A cross from Jamie Barron was headed into the net by Josh Harfield, condemning Magpies to their second league defeat of the campaign.

But the Cuthbury boss, who was forced to replace Toby Holmes at half-time through injury, praised his players’ endeavour.

He told the Daily Echo: “I am absolutely delighted with the effort

“Some of the approach play was excellent, it was just the final killer ball we struggled with a little bit.

“We started creating chances in the second half, so there were lots of positives.”

He added: “It should have been a minimum of a draw. They were on the back foot in the second half just clearing balls and time wasting a little bit – they were being very professional about it in slowing the game down.

“We kept having a go and that’s all you can ask as a manager.”

Magpies: Benfield, Penny, Walker, Maybury, Oldring, Kellaway (Bayston, 65), Stokoe (Buck, 85), L Holmes, T Holmes (Mogg, h-t), Francis, Lovell. Unused subs: Davidson, Cann.
