SKIPPER Jamie Whisken is desperate to lead Poole Town to Southern League title glory – and make the club’s doubters eat their words.

Whisken will be looking to add a Premier Division winners’ medal to his collection when Dolphins host Dunstable Town at Tatnam tomorrow (3pm).

Victory would secure the championship for Poole and finally exorcise the demons of last season’s failure when they choked in sight of the winning line.

Whisken revealed the players had received a barrage of snide remarks this season after being pipped by Corby for the title on the final day and then losing the play-off semi-final to St Neots.

It was the fourth time former Cherries apprentice Whisken had suffered play-off heartbreak, having lost the Premier Division final with Farnborough in 2009 and AFC Totton in 2012, together with going down in the Division One South & West semi-final with the Stags in 2010.

Whisken, who also helped Totton lift the Division One South & West title in 2011, told the Daily Echo: “We know the pressure will be on but I am sure the crowd will be right behind us.

“We are on a roll. We are keeping clean sheet after clean sheet and the lads are believing in each other. We believe we can do it.

“Not a game has gone by this season when an opposition fan, player or manager hasn’t reminded us about what happened and told us we were going to throw it away again.

“As a player myself, I have loved it because it has given me the drive to push on and do what needs to be done this season.

“I think it is the same with the whole squad. We are all absolutely desperate to do it, for the manager more than anything because he has been through hell with us down the years. We want to do it for him, for ourselves and for our supporters.”

Whisken added: “Personally, I have been involved in too many play-offs that haven’t been successful. I don’t want another one, I want to win the title.

“I want to win it with Poole and push on to National South where, with the squad we have, I think we should be.

“I know we have three games left but we don’t want three attempts. We want it done at the first time of asking and that is exactly what we will be aiming to do.”
