JOE Wood netted twice as Verwood Town overcame Lymington Town in the second round of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup.

Wood’s double, which came either side of half-time, earned the Potters a comfortable 3-0 victory at Potterne Park.

The big striker drew first blood for the hosts when he opened the scoring with a goal in the seventh minute.

Verwood doubled their lead five minutes into the second half when Charlie Gajic claimed the final touch following a scramble.

And Wood wrapped up victory when he bagged Verwood’s third and his second with nine minutes remaining.

Scott Joyce plundered a hat-trick as Brockenhurst booked their place in the third round with a convincing 3-0 victory over struggling Alresford Town.

Christchurch exited in dramatic fashion when they lost to an extra-time winner at Amesbury Town, while New Milton also bowed out.

The Linnets suffered a 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Cowes Sports who netted through Charlie Smeeton (2), Ed Sanders and Aidan Sainsbury.

Ringwood Town’s trip to AFC Stoneham in the second round was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, as was Poppies’ clash at Horndean in Wessex Premier.
