JUBILANT Hamworthy United boss Shane Traynor hailed his players for the way they had approached their FA Cup rematch with Andover Town.

Hammers came from behind to register a 2-1 win over their Wessex Premier rivals on Saturday – having already beaten them 4-0 at the County Ground last month.

However, an FA commission ordered the preliminary round tie to be restaged after it had emerged Hammers had fielded an ineligible player.

Kane Daysh, who netted in the original win, was suspended regarding a matter involving his Sunday league team, an admin error which could have seen Hammers thrown out.

Matt Kemble’s finely-taken double earned Hammers a trip to Southern League Bideford in the first qualifying round tomorrow and saw them bank £1,950 in prize money.

Traynor told the Daily Echo: “It was a fantastic result for the club. It was all about being in the right frame of mind and the players were.

“It is not easy going into a game which you think you have already won once. We knew Andover would give it a real go and I tried not to put too much pressure on the lads.

“It was just a case of making sure we did the right things and the players couldn’t wait to get out there.

“The first half was fairly even and there weren’t many clear-cut chances. But the game came to life in the second. We always felt there would be an opportunity to play our football in the final third because we hadn’t been clinical in the first half.

“Matt Kemble equalised with a half-volley from 35 to 40 yards which caught their goalkeeper off his line. It was a fantastic strike. Once we had scored, I couldn’t see us not winning because our tails were up and we got the second.”

Traynor has already embarked on a fact-finding mission to run the rule over Bideford and watched their 0-0 draw with Paulton Rovers just days after Hammers had beaten Andover in the first game.

He added: “It was an interesting watch and there were a couple of things we can take which, hopefully, we use to our advantage.

“We are full of confidence with the way we have been playing. I know they are two levels above us but we will show them respect and, hopefully, they will do the same.”

Daysh, who was not permitted to face Andover as part of the FA commission’s decision, returns to the squad for the trip to Devon.

The winners of the delayed first qualifying round tie will travel to National League South Gosport Borough.

Hammers: Collins, Smith, Cole, Legg, Walker, Davidson, Bayston (Haysom, 89), Penny, Hester, Kemble, Hill. Unused subs: Phillips, Brock, Satterley.

  • Steve Devlin’s first-half penalty saw Poole progress to the second qualifying round thanks to a 1-0 win over Barnstaple at Tatnam. Tom Killick's men were handed a trip to National League South outfit Hayes & Yeading in today's second qualifying round draw.
