EDDIE Mitchell has revealed his decision whether to purchase a majority shareholding in Poole Town rests on finding a suitable base for the club.

Mitchell acquired a two-year option to take a controlling interest in the Dolphins in December 2013 and, within a fortnight, had unveiled plans for a new stadium.

In April 2014, he released an ambitious new vision for Poole Stadium, a revamp that would involve the club sharing facilities with Poole Pirates at the home it left in 1994.

Mitchell insisted his work to find Poole a permanent home had not relented but added that the quest had proved trickier than he had initially anticipated.

And with just six months left to complete his takeover, he admits the deal remains in the balance.

Mitchell told the Daily Echo: “I have spent a considerable amount of time looking at various parts of the club and talking to Chris Reeves (vice-chairman) about certain details that could affect my decision.

“My intention is to carry on searching to build a more secure future for Poole Town with regard to a place to play.

“It is not about winning games or anything financial, it is more about finding a location to make it possible for me to build. It desperately needs a permanent base.

“We are still exploring all possibilities and pushing but it is not easy. It would appear there are not a lot of venues that would work for Poole Town but we are working on it.”

Asked whether finding a suitable ground would affect his decision to buy Poole, Mitchell added: “It is the main factor. I set myself a task of trying to find a permanent location which is still ongoing. It is proving to be more difficult than I thought but who knows what’s around the corner.”

On the prospect of remaining at the club’s current facility, Mitchell continued: “I think Tatnam could be a great permanent home but, at the moment, it is restricted as to what we can do with it.

“It is about having the right infrastructure to implement the things that the club’s history deserves. That is why I got involved and remains my primary aim.

“Wherever it plays football and whatever the level, it warrants having a base that the supporters can enjoy, knowing that their kids will more than likely go to that same place in the future. It is what all clubs need and what most clubs have.

“I wouldn’t want to predict whether or not it is likely to happen, all I can say is that it deserves to happen.

“The club has been established for more than 100 years and the more support we can get, the more likely it is to happen but it won’t be easy.”
