CARETAKER Shane Traynor has been handed the permanent manager’s role at Hamworthy United.

Traynor, who spent two-and-a-half years as a youth coach at Cherries, tonight guided Hammers to the second victory of his temporary tenure, presiding over a 2-0 derby win at Bournemouth Poppies.

Chairman Mark Bartlett announced the appointment in the away dressing room straight after the full-time whistle at Victoria Park, with 36-year-old Traynor quick to recognise the boost his players had given to his cause.

“I put it down to the squad," said the new County Ground boss. "Their hard work and effort over the past few games has been excellent, they have all fought for me to get this job.

“My emphasis is on hard work and the lads have responded in a positive manner. The aim is to keep this squad together and after adding a couple of players in recent weeks we now hope to promote a couple of the under 18s.

“The chairman said he had no expectations for the rest of this season. We just want to keep developing the team, do as well as we can and pick up as many points as possible along the way.”

Traynor, appointed Hamworthy’s reserve-team manager at the start of this season, will be assisted by Jeff Taylor, his right-hand man with United’s Dorset Premier League side.

Bartlett confirmed he had interviewed three other unnamed candidates, all connected to other clubs, after former United manager Phil Simkin had withdrawn his interest due to personal reasons.

"The lads know and respect Shane and we felt it was important to try and establish some continuity at the club," said Bartlett.

Hamworthy won a scrappy contest with Poppies courtesy of two quick-fire strikes during the dying embers.

Cherries loanee Luke Holmes, the 17-year-old son of Dean Court favourite Matty Holmes, scored his first senior goal six minutes from the end with Kane Daysh sealing the result against his former club less than 60 seconds later.
