NEW Milton bowler Nick Gargaro is poised to earn his first England cap at the age of 51.
The left-arm swing bowler has jetted to Sri Lanka with the England over-50s squad for a one-day international tournament, which is due to begin tomorrow.
The likes of Pakistan and India are due to compete at the inaugural event, which is being played at Test venues including Galle and Colombo.
Pakistan are set to include in their side former Test captain Aamer Sohail and spin bowler Akram Raza, who played in 49 ODIs.
Gargaro, who has played for New Milton for more than two decades, joked: “My wife thinks I’m even sadder than she had originally thought for jetting round the world to play cricket!
“We did tours when I played rep cricket in my teens but nothing as exotic as this.
“Given the country, the conditions and the opposition, it’s going to be an amazing experience. It’s a challenge which I never thought I’d get in my 50s.”
