CHERRIES midfielder Sam Matthews is expected to remain at National League Eastleigh for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old spent the first half of the campaign on loan to the Spitfires, netting twice in 21 appearances.

His stay at the Silverlake Stadium expired following Eastleigh's 4-2 win over Guiseley on Saturday when Matthews was named man of the match.

He was also selected in The Non-League Paper’s National League team of the day having been "at the heart of everything as Eastleigh racked up a big win".

Matthews, who also served the Hampshire club on loan last season, is set to pen a fresh agreement which will see him stay until the end of the season.

However, he will not be allowed to face his parent club in the quarter-final of the Hampshire Senior Cup later this month as competition rules do not permit loan players featuring.

Cherries have surrendered home advantage in the last-eight showdown and visit the Silverlake on Tuesday, January 30 (7pm kick-off).
