CHERRIES coach Mark Molesley is desperate to “get one over” his mentor Terry Brown as he targets a memorable cup double.

Molesley, interim manager of Cherries under-21s, saw them book a place in the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup courtesy of a 1-0 win at Hartley Wintney on Tuesday.

The victory came just seven days after midfielder Molesley had captained Weymouth in their Dorset Senior Cup semi-final triumph over Wimborne.

And Molesley, who has a player-coach role with the Terras, could become the first man to get his hands on both trophies in the same season.

Cherries’ win over Combined Counties Premier Division leaders Hartley Wintney set up a date with Basingstoke Town – who are managed by Molesley’s former boss Brown.

Molesley told the Daily Echo: “I know Terry very well and played against Basingstoke for Weymouth not long ago.

“Terry gave me my senior debut at Hayes in the Conference and then took me to Aldershot and made me a professional for the first time in my career.

“He is someone I owe a lot and a mentor for me so it would be nice to try to get one over him.

“I am in my first venture into management so to speak and he was my first full-time manager so it will be a bit of a master-and-apprentice situation!

“Basingstoke are a very good, young side. They are full-time and play some good stuff. I am sure it will be an entertaining game.”

Gavin Kilkenny’s finely-taken 61st-minute goal saw Cherries progress – with the final possibly set to be staged at Southampton’s St Mary’s ground. Weymouth will face either Gillingham Town or Swanage Town & Herston in the Dorset Senior Cup showpiece.

Molesley added: “Playing in a cup final is probably a little easier because you just have to worry about yourself. When you are managing, you are thinking about everyone else’s roles and responsibilities.

“It would be fantastic for the lads if the final were to be played at St Mary’s and that was part of the carrot we gave them. A big stadium and a good surface would suit us.

“It is a great achievement by the lads to get through. It was a tough game against a free-scoring non-league team who have battered everyone they have played this season.

“We fielded mainly under-18s and I thought they gave a great account of themselves. They had to deal with a lot of balls into the box and show they could do the dirtier side of the game which they did well.

“They threw everything at us and, for such a young team, they stood up and were resilient and can take a lot from that.

“The other team didn’t give them an inch and were in their faces. We asked young boys to stand up and be men and they did.

“It is testament to the work Carl Fletcher has done with them. I was fortunate to inherit a well-organised and very talented team. I was really proud of the boys and the way the stood up to it.”
