ANDREW Surman revealed how the “unique” roar from a packed away end at Charlton had stopped Cherries in their tracks and kicked off the Championship title celebrations.

Cherries, who had all but sealed promotion to the Premier League ahead of today’s finale, cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Addicks having raced into a two-goal lead within 12 minutes at the Valley.

Table-topping Watford responded by nudging in front at home to Sheffield Wednesday and retained a lead that would have sealed the silverware until the dying embers.

But Atdhe Nuhiu, the burly striker who was fouled for the penalty which earned the Owls a 2-2 draw in the fifth minute of added time at Dean Court a fortnight ago, popped up with a 90th-minute leveller at Vicarage Road to help Cherries claim top spot.

Cherries players paused to look at one another as fans in the bulging Jimmy Seed Stand erupted before realising their title dream had just come true.

Midfielder Surman explained that the team's focus had been on pushing for two more goals to bring up an historic century of league strikes as a consolation for not taking the ultimate prize until the good news filtered through.

Describing the moment the penny dropped, Surman told the Daily Echo: “You just knew something had happened when the cheers went up.

“It was one of the best and most unique noises I have heard in a football ground. It was a surreal experience which sent shivers down my spine.

“On the pitch, everyone looked at each other for a second and wondered what was going on. We thought it might have been for the equaliser or even another goal. We didn’t realise it was full-time.

“At that point, our focus was on trying to get to five goals because we wanted the record and had six or so minutes left to get the two we needed.

“If we couldn’t have won the league then we at least wanted to go and grab another record. Maybe we could have been further ahead at half-time but that got completely forgotten when the cheer went up!

“Fair play to Sheffield Wednesday as well because a lot of people had written them off but we knew they would play right to the end. They were great at our place as well, so hats off to them.

“To celebrate like that with the fans at the end was the highlight of my career and I know that was the case for most of the other lads as well.

“It was absolutely crazy. To get promoted at home on Monday was an incredible feeling but even I couldn’t quite imagine winning the league and feeling like this.”
