CHERRIES’ teenage defender Baily Cargill is expected to be named in the England starting line-up for tomorrow’s under-20 friendly against Canada.

The 19-year-old, who is one of the youngest players in the squad, is set to earn his spurs when the Three Lions showcase their talents at Dean Court (7.30pm).

Cargill earned a call-up after impressing England coach Aidy Boothroyd during Cherries’ passage to the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

He cemented his place after starring in the last 16 victory over Premier League West Brom having helped Cherries keep clean sheets in the first three rounds against Exeter, Northampton and Cardiff.

Winchester-born Cargill can expect plenty of local support – with father Steve, mother Esther, sister Lauren and brother Darcy set to be among the crowd along with a host of other relations and friends, including girlfriend Dominie.

In an interview with the FA yesterday, Cargill said: “I can’t wait for the experience to be able to pull on an England shirt – it is a great honour. It is at Bournemouth so that is only down the road from me in Southampton so all my family can come and I am sure they can help put a few more on the gate.”

Cargill, who was fast-tracked to Eddie Howe’s first-team squad in the summer, admitted his call-up had come as something of a surprise.

“I was speechless to be honest,” added Cargill, who will also be hoping to feature when England face Portugal in Coimbra on Monday. “It is an amazing feeling to be recognised. I had only spoken to my family about it, imagining that it could happen, but didn’t know until the manager Eddie Howe pulled me after training on Thursday to let me know.

“It has been a great experience so far. I met a few of the lads on Sunday and they have all been really good with me. We had a double training session (on Monday) which was brilliant and I really like Aidy.

“It has been really relaxed so far but the players are brilliant and there are some top players in the age group. I am still improving myself so am just trying to do as much as I can and, hopefully, Aidy can help me with that.”

Tickets for the game are priced at £3 for adults and £1 for under-16s and will be on sale in person or over the phone on 0844 576 1910.
