CHERRIES’ man of the moment Callum Wilson delivered an honest appraisal of his Middlesbrough misfortune and admitted: “I should have scored.”

Wilson held up his hand and conceded he had had a day to forget in front of goal as Eddie Howe’s men fought out a tense 0-0 draw at the Riverside on Saturday.

The striker lined up against Boro on the back of being crowned Championship player of the month for October and earning a maiden call-up for England under-21s.

But Wilson, who has been a revelation since joining Cherries in the summer, failed to add to his 11-goal haul despite being handed some presentable opportunities.

In a candid interview with the Daily Echo, Wilson said: “You take confidence from the award but games like this knock your confidence a little when you get chances and don’t take them.

“Overall, it was a good result for the team and a great point for us against second place away from home. But on a personal note, I had opportunities where I should have scored.

“I was in the wrong position when the ball came across the box at times and it just flashed in front of me. Usually, they are food and drink and I put them away. But it was one of those days when I don’t think I could have done anything right to score.

“It is gone now and I have to look forward to the next game. I am my own biggest critic and, even if I play well, I will find a negative to work on to make myself a better player.

“I wasn’t at my best so there were a few negatives to take even though there were positives on the working hard front. I know it is about the team but it wasn’t a great day in front of goal for me.”

Wilson is today due to link up with the England squad at St George’s Park to begin preparations for friendlies against Portugal at Turf Moor on Thursday and France in Brest on November 17.

The 22-year-old Coventry-born hitman had a fascinating tussle with Ben Gibson at the Riverside, the Boro defender also named in Gareth Southgate’s 22-man squad.

Wilson added: “He is a good player. Boro had a game-plan and executed it well. When we had the ball, they dropped off straight away so there was never really any space and it was more of a fight in the air rather than a ball down the side for me.

“Ben congratulated me on the call-up after the game and said he would see me again on Monday. It will be nice to catch up and have a chat with him about the game.”
