CHERRIES development squad coach Stephen Purches insists loaning players to non-league clubs must be a two-way street.

Purches was speaking after he had decided to bring back Callum Buckley from Dorchester Town – and then immediately send Josh Kaye to Cherries’ Southern League neighbours.

The teenagers, both first-year professionals at Dean Court, are equally adept at left-back and in central defence and were switched in something of a like-for-like move.

Buckley gained valuable experience with the Magpies after moving to the Avenue Stadium with team-mate Mason Walsh at the start of the season, although Walsh’s stay was subsequently cut short due to injury.

Purches told the Daily Echo: “There is interest in a number of our players but we won’t send them out just for the sake of it. It is a case of trying to make sure the right player goes to the right club at the right time.

“As we have joined a league this season, we have a lot of games ourselves, virtually one a week, and need to make sure we are as competitive as we can be.

“Josh has played pretty much every game for us this season and going to Dorchester will give him a different experience. We had a chance to switch them and, from his point of view, it is time for him to go and sample a different type of football environment in what will be his first loan spell.

“At some stage, every player will go somewhere and it is just a case of trying to pick the right time. We need to give them every chance to experience something different but it has to work for the loaning club and for us going forward.”

Midfielder Josh Wakefield is currently enjoying a fruitful loan spell with Conference high-fliers Torquay United, while frontman Aristide Bassele is likely to extend his stay at Welling.

Purches added: “They are both gaining experience in the Conference which is a tough league. Josh Wakefield has gone there and is training full-time with them. It is a different experience for him to train with another club and they are hoping to gain promotion. He is enjoying the challenge and that is why we wanted him to go there. Aristide is doing okay at Welling and they are keen to extend his stay.”

Purches confirmed injured striker Josh O’Hanlon could stay with Poole Town, with the Irishman penning an extension to his youth loan now rather than signing a fresh loan at a later date.

Sam Matthews (ankle) is around three weeks from returning to training, while striker Brandon Goodship, who recently had a knee operation, is expected back in around a month.

Cherries are today due to meet Reading in a development squad friendly at the Berkshire club’s training ground.
