BULLISH hotshot Callum Wilson insisted he never lost faith in his ability to score in the Championship – thanks to his Cherries team-mates.

The 22-year-old hitman emphatically ended a five-match scoreless run as his deadly double led Cherries to a 2-1 win at bottom club Bolton.

Wilson, a summer signing from hometown club Coventry City, hit the ground running and netted four times in his opening five second-tier starts before embarking on a brief barren run in front of goal.

But having found his way back to the goal trail, Wilson was adamant his confidence had never suffered with his colleagues having provided him with sturdy support.

Wilson, who has seven goals to his name in all competitions, told the Daily Echo: “On a personal note, I had gone a few games without a goal, probably as long as I have gone without scoring.

“I was thinking about it slightly so it was important to get back on the score sheet and thankfully I did.

“I was quite relaxed about it because I knew the goals would come as long as I kept performing. My main focus was to do well for the team and get myself in good positions round the box and I still felt good within myself.

“My team-mates know I can score goals, it’s just a case of taking those chances when they come and in this team they always will because of the way we play.

“The good thing was nobody got on my back, they just wanted to encourage me. We’re a team and we want each other to do well.”

And with a supportive atmosphere in the Dean Court dressing room, Wilson believes Cherries’ hopes of mounting a promotion challenge is more than a mere pipe dream.

“Everyone has the same ambition and wants to do well,” he added. “As long as we keep our feet on the ground and pick up results then I don’t think we’ll be far off come the end of the season.

"We had to dig deep (at Bolton) but proved we have the ability to win when it got tough. You have to take each game at a time but we want to aim high.”
