DEAN Court stalwart Stephen Purches believes Cherries’ managerial vacancy will attract top bosses because the club has “so much potential”.

The loyal Cherries servant says he expects a number of leading contenders to come forward following Paul Groves’s exit on Wednesday.

Purches, who joined Cherries from West Ham in 2000 before returning in 2010 following three years at Leyton Orient, told the Daily Echo: “There are huge attractions at the club.

“It is close to my heart, I am very fond of it and I am sure there are a lot of other people who feel the same way as me. It is a great club to be a part of.

“I am sure there will be plenty of interest from top names and from other up-and-coming managers.

“I am sure it would be a hard job for anyone to turn down if offered as well. I hope whoever comes in really relishes the chance to stamp their authority on it and take us places.”

Chairman Eddie Mitchell today revealed he had held informal talks with mystery managerial candidates. Some of the names linked with the post include Steve Cotterill, Karl Robinson, Greg Abbott, Gary Johnson and Glenn Hoddle.

Purches, who is making good progress in his recovery from a broken leg, is hoping Cherries will forget the off-field situation and find some form when they visit Coventry City in League One tomorrow afternoon (3pm).

He added: “Once the game kicks off, it is all about just getting the points.

“That is what we are paid to do and the lads are desperate to get some wins on the board because we want to be higher in the table than we are.”
