FORMER Premiership star Chris Fortey is backing “annoying” old pal Tim Collier to get Lions roaring in National Two South.

Hartpury College captain Fortey got himself on the scoresheet as the fourth tier big guns dished out a 43-7 mauling to newly-promoted Bournemouth on Saturday.

Veteran hooker Fortey, who began his professional career with hometown club Gloucester, played alongside Lions forwards coach Collier during their time at Worcester.

The old warriors locked horns – albeit with unused substitute Collier in a coaching role on the touchline – when Hartpury gave Lions a lesson in ruthless rugby at Chapel Gate.

But Fortey believes Bournemouth have enough quality to compete this season.

He thinks the contribution of experienced lock Collier could prove crucial.

Fortey told the Daily Echo: “I played with Tim at Worcester.

“He is passionate about what he does and will be putting them through the mill at training this week. I am sure he will have the boys working hard.”

Fortey also reckons Collier would still be a useful option in the Lions second row.

The former Harlequins and England under-21s lock plans to make himself available for selection more this term as Lions bid to settle in their new division.

“I would rather hear him on the sideline than on the pitch because he is the most annoying person to play with and against – trust me,” joked Fortey.

Fortey, 37, added: “Bournemouth are a good side and have got some good individual players.

“I think they will pose a challenge for teams coming here this season.

“At this level, it is all about making sure you do your basics right.

“I know Tim Collier very well and he might have been a |little disappointed with the platform set by his forwards on Saturday.

“But if you get the basics right, that then leads to other things.

“They will be good and are a team that will challenge opponents, especially at home.

“Bournemouth are up at the level for the first time. It is all about enjoying it but also being competitive.”
