SOUTHERN League Wimborne Town brought up an unwanted hat-trick after suffering a shock 1-0 FA Cup defeat at the hands of Wessex League outfit Fareham Town.

Magpies, beaten at home by lower-league opposition in the past two seasons, were again dumped out at Cuthbury after Bryn McKie bagged the only goal two minutes into the second half.

Wimborne’s woes were compounded when defender Nathan Peprah-Annan was sent off after collecting a second yellow card in the closing stages.

“We were bitterly disappointed,” said Magpies manager Steve Cuss. “The performance was well below the standards we have set and Fareham thoroughly deserved to win.

“In our first two league games, we created chances. We couldn’t get that going at all against Fareham and resorted to kicking it long.”

Defeat cost Wimborne a potentially-lucrative home tie against neighbours Christchurch in the first qualifying round and saw Fareham walk off with £1,750 in prize money.

“There is a lot of money at stake and we are disappointed we will not be receiving any,” added Cuss. “We don’t budget to win a certain number of games in cup competitions so all prize money is a bonus.”

Cuss said he had “no complaints” with either of Peprah-Annan’s two yellow cards, the player set to be hit by a one-match ban for his dismissal.

Wimborne played second fiddle to Fareham for long periods, although Micky Hubbard went close to scoring early on before Tom Jeffes almost grabbed a late equaliser.

Defender Shaun Brian, who was substituted after hurting his back when he fell awkwardly in the second half, is a doubt for Wimborne’s Division One South & West derby at Poole today (3pm).
