Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell has told Steve Evans he will be wasting his time if he tries to revive his interest in Matt Tubbs.

Mitchell was speaking after Rotherham United manager Evans hinted he could be set to consider another swoop for Cherries’ record signing.

The Millers had a bid for Tubbs, understood to have been in the region of £200,000, turned down by Cherries in May.

Evans, who worked with the prolific striker at Crawley Town, yesterday reiterated that he was a big fan of the Cherries frontman.

But Mitchell responded by insisting Cherries had no wish to sell and issued a hands-off warning.

When asked if Cherries had heard from Rotherham since their rejected offer, he told the Daily Echo: “No, we haven’t.

“They wouldn’t get him anyway because he looks lean and mean, he is fit, he has looked after himself in the close season and we can’t wait to get him on the pitch.”

In an interview with the BBC, Evans said: “Matt Tubbs is a fantastic player, first and foremost, and a great goalscorer for the levels where we ply our trade. He is a top-class young man.

“Would I see myself working with Matthew Tubbs in the future? Yes, we would love to.

“But, first and foremost, he is an AFC Bournemouth player and I think the truth is that he is in AFC Bournemouth’s plans.

“From a distance, I have seen Paul Groves sign a number of strikers, but he may be in the privileged position that he can have six or seven strikers.

“In the words of better managers than me, you can never have too many good strikers. We like Matthew. Whether we could get him here remains to be seen.”

Speaking to the Echo last month, Tubbs said he had no desire to leave Dean Court and set his sights on living up to his reported £800,000 price tag.

“Bournemouth is my home-town club so I don’t really fancy travelling halfway up the country to be out of my comfort zone again,” he said. “I am happy where I am.”

Mitchell, meanwhile, confirmed there had been no interest showed in any of Cherries’ other players.

He revealed Cherries were still “working on” a permanent deal for Derby County centre-half Miles Addison, with the transfer of the former Dean Court loan star getting “closer”.

Mitchell added that other transfer targets were also being considered – with manager Paul Groves keen to sign a left-back.
