PARKSTONE prospect George Long came within a whisker of winning a prestigious South West title.
Long’s one-over-par 70 was just one shot behind under-16 winner Calum Hannay at the Exeter Golf and Country Club.
The four-handicapper did well to overcome four dropped shots to claim the runners-up position.
Dorset, meanwhile, finished joint third in the David King Salver at the South West Under-16/Under-14 Championships.
Six under-16s and three under-14s play with four gross scores from the first group and one from the younger trio added together to determine the champion county.
Cornwall claimed first place with a 375 total, four ahead of runners-up Somerset. Dorset tied with hosts Devon on 386.
Dorset’s Dominic Dunstan also claimed an individual runners-up prize with a 77 in the under-14 event. The nine-handicapper’s fine performance earned him the net prize.
Knighton Heath’s Jack Baker was Dorset’s second best scorer with a 74.
