CHAIRMAN Eddie Mitchell says he will be involved in assessing potential transfer targets – but he insists boss Paul Groves will play the major role.

Mitchell confirmed that Groves and assistant Shaun Brooks would get the final say on player recruitment.

Their appointment on Friday sparked a backlash from a section of Cherries supporters, but Mitchell and Groves strongly refuted claims from some fans that the duo would be ‘yes men’.

Manager Groves is planning to bolster his squad this summer and Mitchell says he will support the new boss.

He told the Daily Echo: “We have never, since I’ve been at the club, given anybody a budget.

“If a player is going to improve the situation and they are available at the right price, then we have got to consider it and try to bring them in.

“We are always going to be looking and if the right person at the right price is out there, then we will be looking for them. But that won’t be my decision, it will be Paul and Shaun’s.”

When asked if he would try his best to back Groves if the manager identified targets, Mitchell replied: “I think, in general, that is what does happen.

“But also me, my business partner (Maxim Demin) and Tom (Mitchell, director) will all be looking at various players and we have got a scout who is advising us, so if somebody is brought to the forefront then we will look at it and draw a conclusion.

“But Paul and Shaun will be the people that have got to work with them so, by and large, most of the choice will come from them.”
