EMILY Clarke and Martin Littlefair produced two of the swims of the day to set Poole on the road to topping the Dorset Champion-ships medals table for the first time in 40 years.

Including championship as well as age group medals, Poole reached the halfway point of the championships with 159 medals – 71 gold, 46 silver and 42 bronze.

Swim Bournemouth matched their overall tally but had 24 fewer golds, while Seagulls’ 108 medals, including 34 golds, also underlined the changing landscape of Dorset swimming.

But the top club award will be decided on points for places rather than medals, which could present a different outcome.

Clarke, just 14, arrived at Littledown with a best time for the 200m backstroke of 2:27.87.

She left a few hours later as the Dorset senior, junior and 14yrs age group champion with a new PB of 2:20.69 – a time that also qualifies her for an individual event at the national age groups for the first time.

Clarke carried her form into the 800m freestyle, slashing 15 seconds off her PB to claim the senior and junior titles in 9:23.65.

She was also involved in a Poole clean sweep of the medals in the 400m individual medley.

Littlefair, meanwhile, returned from Swansea ITC, where he trains under former Bourne-mouth Dolphins coach Graham Bassi, to win three senior titles and break five records for Poole.

His winning 2:07.96 in the 200m medley broke not only his own championship record but the Dorset senior record, held by his old Dolphins sparring partner Joe Poynter.

Littlefair, 17, also won the 50m freestyle in 24.37 and led home a quintet of sub two-minute swimmers in the 200m freestyle.

Both his 1:53.28 and runner-up Jay Lelliott’s 1:54.07 were inside the old championship record.

Also in the mix were Bournemouth’s Craig Freeman, whose 1:56.04 was an age group CBT (competition best time), and Poole’s Harry Thorpe (1:57.53) and 14-year-old Dan Speers, whose 1:59.09 made him Dorset junior champion.

It was one of three junior titles for Speers, who won the junior 200m medley title in 2:14.87 and whose 14yrs 50m freestyle CBT of 24.75 was beaten only by Littlefair.

Tornadoes’ Lelliott, meanwhile, set county records in the 1500m freestyle (16:01.41) and 200m backstroke (2:02.69).

The respective junior titles went to Poole’s Todd Price in 18:00.84 and Alan Wong, whose backstroke time of 2:13.53 was an NQT and a 14yrs CBT.

Fifteen-year-olds Jack Burton (Swim Bournemouth) and Noah Vides (Poole) both broke the junior championship record as they won gold and silver in the men’s 100m breaststroke in 1:07.31 and 1:07.81.

Seagulls’ Dan Walker picked up the junior bronze in 1:10.37, which was also inside the old 15yrs CBT.

Walker was one of several Seagulls’ Bournemouth Collegiate School swimmers who made memorable Dorset debuts, most notably Jessie Foster.

The 13-year-old, who has previously swum in the Wiltshire and Somerset championships, became senior and junior champion in two events, winning the 100m breaststroke from team-mate Beth Aitchison in 1:14.33 and the 200m medley from Poole’s Naomi Vides in a 13yrs CBT of 2:21.57.

Swim Bournemouth’s Abbie Quarrie made a record-breaking championship debut when she set a 9yrs CBT of 2:42.64, while Poole’s Courtney Rowan, 15, was the queen of the sprints, winning the senior and junior 50m free-style (27.44) and butterfly (29.64).

Bournemouth’s Lucy Kirkham achieved a senior-junior double in the 200m freestyle (2:09.67).

Just 0.1sec separated Bournemouth’s Adrian Todd, Poole’s Harry Thorpe and Tornadoes’ Lelliott as they claimed the senior 50m butterfly medals in 26.60, 26.68 and 26.70. Seagulls’ Cianan Mann was junior champion.

Poole won three of the four relays and were denied a clean sweep only by a disqualification in the women’s 4x100m freestyle – though even that offered a consolation prize, as it moved their B team up to third, missing gold and silver by just 0.06 and 0.01sec.
