BOURNEMOUTH Poppies couldn’t make their dominance count in the Wessex League derby at Victoria Park as 10-man Hamworthy United escaped with a well-earned point.

Despite dominating possession, Poppies created little in front of goal – Jon Blake’s tame header and Sean Hogan’s wayward shot were the best the home side could muster in the opening exchanges, with goalkeeper Max Frampton largely a spectator.

Matt Blake had a penalty appeal turned down after half an hour and Fawzi Saadi worked a good position for himself only to shoot wide from close range five minutes before the interval.

Poppies continued to dominate after the break as Jon Blake’s fierce shot whistled past the far post following good work from Hogan.

Martin Warren came closest to a breakthrough on 69 minutes – Ollie Phillipson-Masters drilled a low cross in from the left which Warren did well to control, but with United goalkeeper Simon Evans beaten his shot went wide.

Hamworthy had their solitary chance for a smash and grab five minutes later when a quick break down the left found Liam Currell in space, but a moment of hesitancy made the shot more comfortable for Frampton to save.

With 15 minutes left Hammers were reduced to 10 men when midfielder Will Robinson collected a second yellow card for deliberate handball, and the hosts pushed an extra man forward in their quest for a winner.

Dave Ewen volleyed over from 18 yards before an injury time opportunity went begging that summed up the Poppies’ evening.

Luke Ingram’s low cross from the right found Warren 12 yards out, but he missed the ball completely, ensuring the scoresheet remained blank.
