POPPIES were controversially denied a late equaliser by referee Andy Dine as Bashley edged the Hampshire Senior Cup tie with a 1-0 victory on Tuesday night.

Dine blew for an infringement by Dave Ewen in the last minute of stoppage time as Bash goalkeeper Joe Prodomo spilt Dan Taylor’s deep cross into his own net, much to the disgust of the Bournemouth front man.

Until then, it had been a low key affair which was settled by a Tom Hill goal 12 minutes from time. The Bash’s ‘pocket rocket’ was the unlikely winner of a close-range header after Luke Whitley had nodded Dave Allen’s cross back into the danger area.

The home side controlled the game after a shaky opening 15 minutes, but made little impression in the final third.

There was little incident after the interval until Liam Green’s free kick cannoned off the Poppies crossbar in the 68th minute.

Poppies looked tired, but still pushed for an equaliser, with Fawzi Saadi’s corner flashing across the face of goal late on.
