Cherries: Bradbury chasing Gregory and new centre-half

BOSS: Lee Bradbury BOSS: Lee Bradbury

BOSS Lee Bradbury could secure Cherries’ first summer signings this week after launching bids for AFC Wimbledon midfielder Steven Gregory and a mystery Championship centre-half, believed to be Crystal Palace's Adam Barrett.

The Cherries manager edged closer to bolstering his squad by submitting a series of offers for his key close-season transfer targets in recent days.

Bradbury is aiming to imminently reap the benefits of his player search as he prepares to open talks with potential recruits.

He confirmed that he had moved swiftly in his attempts to replace Jason Pearce by agreeing a fee for an un-named central defender from the second tier, which the Echo understands is Barrett.

Bradbury is also keen to secure the services of Gregory as he tries to fill the void left by Danny Hollands’s move to Charlton Athletic.

However, he will have to wait to discover whether he will get the green light to discuss terms with Gregory as AFC Wimbledon have yet to accept a bid.

The League Two newcomers rejected an initial offer, believed to be in the region of £40,000, and labelled it “a long way below” their valuation of the former Wycombe Wanderers man.

But Cherries increased the offer and expect to get a response today. Bradbury is keen to get the deal done and believes the “athletic” midfielder would be a quality addition.

He told the Daily Echo: “I have spoken to a lot of people I respect on the non-league circuit, and in League Two, and everyone has got nothing but good things to say about him.

“I think he has got interest from other clubs as well so we are looking to secure his services as soon as possible before those other clubs try to snatch him.”

A central defender is Bradbury’s other priority signing, particularly after Pearce rejoined Portsmouth on Friday for a reported £300,000.

Chairman Eddie Mitchell yesterday confirmed Bradbury had money to spend on replacements. The Cherries manager was keen not to disclose the identity of his target but said: “We have lost Pearcey so that is one of the major things I’m looking at.

“We have agreed a bid with another club for a centre-half from the Championship. We have got talks with him in the next couple of days.”

Meanwhile, Cherries look set to miss out on signing Ben Williamson.

The rookie striker spent the final five months of last season at Dean Court and was offered a new contract by Cherries. But he is set to join Port Vale.

“It is a shame because he is a good player and I think he has a lot of potential,” added Bradbury.

“But I couldn’t guarantee him first-team football with the quality of strikers we’ve got in the squad.

“I couldn’t promise that he’d be playing every week and I think he will be doing that at Port Vale.”

Good luck in your pursuit of new players bradders it not going to be easy in a competative market , apart from when we sell our players , , I just hope we have a ok season and bradders does not get the wrath of the fans if its a poor start , I must be hard being a rooky at this management game and seeing the side he inherited fall apart , nows the chance for bradders to show his knowledge and build a successfull squad for the up and coming seasons ahead , patience is key and I think he deserves it remember bradders does not have a say who stays or goes !

The fun is about to start.
At our level we need to release a few before we can get some in, and Lee now knows what his player budget is.
It was much more enjoyable before the internet, all this negativity does no one any good.
We have a good squad with three excellent forwards...goals win matches.

ah well, i have looked for his comments on www.thisishampshire.
net on saints stories & guess what? that's right, no sign of him so another guy with a 'peter france type of agenda in my book. there are several of their like on here unfortunately & a large percentage seem to be on this storyboard today!

lee has evidently missed 2 of his targets (out of the 4) but has many others in his sights. expect a well known name next week.

the plans to eventually buy the ground back seem to be going to plan & this must be crucial to our long term success. rumour has it that 3 clubs are close to going to the wall & i can't see us being in that worrying position again now the club is being run correctly after all those years of awful management.

good luck to joe roach by the way. a top man.

I must admit I do like coming on here just to suck in the doom and gloom.

Our Saints site is far too friendly, stable and very optimistic for the forthcoming season with no cash flow probs, fantastic stadium, great fan base, great gates, superb manager and an upstanding and well respected Chairman.

We want to see loads of RED N BLACK shirts around Bournemouth,Boscombe and Christchurch over the next four weeks.
I will be proud to wear mine in Sidmouth and Exeter, and we now have a double digit fan base in Sidmouth as well. The manager of the only garage in town was proudly wearing his cherries shirt all last season.

If we can get a big centre half, preferably two, that will be good business.

You can talk all day about Pearce, but we conceded 3 from corners in the play off games. We need height.

The Gregory deal is far from being a done one - unless the second offer is a substantial increase on the first one Wimbledon will reject it and there is a World of difference between a Championship Centre Back and a Centre Back at a Championship Club. We can only wait and see and hope that Lee has found some "Gems". Still think that we need full backs, right and left ( have little doubt that Wiggens will go) another Centre Back and a mid fielder, still fear that there are more going though - a crucial ten days or so lie ahead.

Totally agree, if that's true. 5-10 may not be short, but it is short for a centre back. Someone at Dean Court seems to have a blind spot about this. They need to watch some footage of last season I think.

That's alright I will enjoy watching your club fighting it's relegation battle next season and subsequent financial disaster when your sugar daddy pulls the plug, I am proud of my club living within it's means, your lot get out of debt and what do they do? go and build up another 21 million in debts, very clever that. Good luck Bradders with your signings, I have to say it looks like we are taking a bit of a risk with both players, I understand you have to buy within your budget and it's going to be tough, I just hope the Chairman gives you the clout to sign players and not miss out as has happened in the past. Mr Chairman, time to prove yourself, we are all getting a little fed up with the stories of players and staff leaving and money being invested in restaurants, how about you show us you are going to back the manager, time to cut the spin and do something!!!

With - Wally and Purches at full back and our backup to them a 5' 4" ex Youth Team Player, should be interesting!. Barret is a mate of Lee's , so he at least knows what he is all about, a third and "final" offer for Gregory too.

No. It is the official website.
.
Yes, it is dated Friday, but there is no update about a second offer, so I think you are splitting hairs.

Let's hope Barrett can jump a bit higher than Pearce, unless we can find a way to avoid conceding corners and free kicks.

Tezza1965 says...

I don't know anything about either player mentioned in this article, so you have to trust in the judgement of the manager. If he feels they are good replacements, and we sign them, I'm sure they will come here and do their best for us.
If Gregory comes in and is not an instant hit we have adequate cover with Molesley and Arter, but my main concern is the centre back positions. Coops is too small. If Barrett is 5'10" then he's too small as well, no matter how good he may be in other repects. Ryan Garry is clearly not coming back, which is a great shame as I believe we would have been promoted if he'd ben in the side all season. The deafening silence from Dean Court about him does nothing to allay my fears that his career is over. Hope I'm wrong though.
The next problem for Bradders will be both full back positions. Wiggins will be sold, no doubt about that, and Smith will not be back. Cummings and Purches are both squad players only, so in short, we need two centre backs and two full backs.
Will Mitchell provide funds to fill ALL these positions?
Not a chance.

Off topic I know but can anyone explain to me why we "value" Danny Ings at £1.5Million?? I don't see why he is worth more than Pitman and McQoid added together! 8 goals in 28 games is hardly anything to get excited about, when you consider an off form Mark Pugh scored 12 goals, and he isn;t even a striker! For a start he only hit the ground running halfway through the season and I for one doubt he was ready due to the number of chances that went begging. But in fairness to the guy, he was on fire come the end of the season, penalty excluded, but all strikers miss those at some point. So for me, YES, he is worth that sort of money, just look at the figures being bandied about where others are concerned. He really has enourmous potential and THATS what they're paying for. If no one wants to stomp up something along those lines, then OFF is the second word... UTCIAD

Looks like Celtic think Ings is worth the £1.5m according to the Talksport website. At that kind of price I can't see us hanging on to him for the start of the season, but I hope I am wrong.

Have some of you really lost the plot ?

1. the club owes no-one money (from what we've been told ) if anything a considerable sum less than that a couple of years ago ( due to who? )

2. Lee Bradbury will want to put his own 'team' together and if that means letting players go to fund new signings, then so be it.

3. No-one is indispensable, Alot of you didnt want Hollands to go, nor Pearce or Pitman etc.. Football is all about money these days. I remember back in the day when Eddie Howe went to portsmouth, it seemed like the end of the world, but we get over it and move on.

It strikes me that some of the fans here are SO short sighted, has it not ocured to you that the future of the squad and team we end up may be 'better' than what we have now,

What you have to realise is that there is a certain 'dynamic' which is needed and several players will be instrumental in that, ie Fletch, we need key players like that in the team. I seriously believe that Lee is trying to build on that dynamic and loosing three players isnt the end of the world.

Look what happened when we lost, Mossy, Neil Young, Gareth O'Connor, Brian Stock, Wade Elliott, John Spicer.. we got on with it and got in newer players -okay it had a knock on, but sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards.. this has happened and some of you are painting a much bleaker picture than the one we're actually seeing.

It's flattering that we're getting so much interest in players, its bound to happen, it happens at other clubs, not just in League 1, but all around.. Get over yourselves and get a life and wake up.... Its not ALL bad!!
