TAFFY Richardson pledged his future to Poole Town and insisted he was confident about his Southern League prospects.

The veteran midfielder revealed he was unfazed to be climbing a division – at the age of 44.

Richardson was a central figure for Dolphins as they earned promotion to Division One South and West by clinching a third consecutive Wessex championship.

The former Wimborne Town and Dorchester Town star made 49 appearances as Poole claimed the crown and also embarked on exciting FA Vase and FA Cup runs.

Non-league legend Richardson is the oldest player on Poole’s books but manager Tom Killick last month declared his desire to retain his services.

And after agreeing terms to stay at Tatnam, Richardson was quick to insist he could prosper at step four level.

He told the Echo: “It is exciting that we are going into a new league and will be playing against better players and on better pitches. It will be nice to be back playing at a better level of football.

“I am fine and I have got every confidence. I think the higher you play, the easier it gets. That sounds stupid but it is no good the lower you go, playing on bad pitches. Playing against better players inspires me and gets me excited about games.”

Richardson believes he will have to work harder to keep his place in the starting line-up next term and also reckons everyone at the club will have to up their game.

He said: “I haven’t got a problem with the lads we have got but nobody should rest. People overtake you very quickly if you stand still.

“The manager and team cannot stand still – that might mean people improving their games or bringing in new players or coaches. I know Tom (Killick) will look at areas to improve and cover, and I am sure he will do what is necessary.”

• Wimborne Town have appointed Tim Collins as their new reserve team manager.

Magpies’ first team boss Steve Cuss said: “I’m delighted that a man of Tim Collins’ calibre is our reserve team manager.”

• Wimborne Town stalwart Paul Roast has been rewarded for his service with a testimonial game against Cherries. The Dean Court outfit are set to visit Cuthbury on Tuesday, July 19.

Skipper Roast quit at the end of the season due to work commitments but made a quick U-turn and was named as player assistant to manager Cuss.
