MARCUS Browning insists Cherries have nothing to fear in the play-offs and believes four of his fellow 2003 heroes have a key role to play.

The popular midfielder was named as Sky Sports’ man of the match when Cherries earned promotion with a win over Lincoln at the Millennium Stadium eight years ago.

Browning, who missed just three games as Cherries booked their play-off place in that season, has urged the class of 2010-11 to keep their cool as they attempt to secure promotion via the same route.

Lee Bradbury’s men confirmed their spot in the League One top six with a game to spare – against Rochdale this weekend.

And although it is still to be decided which teams Cherries will face in the battle for a place in the Championship, Browning says they have nothing to be afraid of following a “fantastic” first season back in the third tier.

The 40-year-old told the Echo: “They shouldn’t fear anyone. They are going into it with a bit of good form. That should stand them in good stead.

“They have just got to treat it like any other game. If you start trying to treat it like a special match and trying to change and do different things, then it is not going to work.

“They have played these teams before so they know what they are all about.

“Can you handle the pressure on the day and stay focused? That is the main thing.

“The fans will be getting anxious and so, probably, will everyone else around the club. But you have just got to try to stay calm.”

Alongside Browning in Cardiff were influential quartet and current Cherries stars Warren Cummings, Steve Fletcher and Stephen Purches, and goalkeeping coach Neil Moss.

When asked whether he felt the experience of his old pals would be important this time round, Browning said: “It is massively important.

“They have been through it before so they know what it is all about.

“The main priority is the semi-final games – that is the first hurdle – and then worry about the final.”

Bristol-born Browning, who represented Wales at international level, made more than 200 appearances for Cherries between 2002 and 2007, before spells in non-league with Weymouth, Bath City and Poole Town.

The ex-Bristol Rovers and Gillingham man has now called time on his playing career and Cherries’ play-off triumph of 2003 remains one of his top memories.

Browning added: “It was a fantastic time. They are great memories and live with you forever.”
