STALWART midfielder Steve ‘Taffy’ Richardson says the latest developments in Poole Town’s search for a permanent home are a triumph for the club’s loyal band of supporters.

The Dolphins were boosted when councillors yesterday unanimously granted planning permission for a new £2m ground in Bearwood – overturning officers’ recommendation to refuse the scheme.

Poole and their long-suffering fans have lived a nomadic existence since leaving Poole Stadium in 1994 – their home for 61 years – and have been housed in several temporary venues.

However, following a number of false dawns, the Wessex League champions-elect, currently playing at Tatnam, could finally have been given an opportunity to put down some firm roots.

Richardson, now in his second spell at the club, told the Daily Echo: “It’s great news for the club. The supporters have been through a lot in the past few years and this decision will mean more to them than it will to the players.

“It will mean everything to the 200 to 300 that turn up every week, the new and old supporters whom have stuck by the club through thick and thin. People like the gate lady, Sylvia Palmer who has been working on the gate for as long as I can remember.

“Players come and go and you will always be able to find other footballers. You can’t always find other supporters.”

Richardson added: “It is also great news for the board and for the manager, Tom Killick. He’s the best in the area and it is vital for the club that he stays here. He wants to manage as high as he can in non-league and I know he wants to do it with Poole Town.”
