CHRISTCHURCH manager Graham Kemp believes his men are still some way off being among next season’s potential Wessex League title contenders.

Priory displayed their credentials on Tuesday night with an impressive 2-0 victory over Premier Division leaders Winchester City.

A header from Callum Burt handed them a 12th-minute lead before Shaun Brian’s 27th-minute effort helped Kemp’s side record a fine win at Hurn Bridge.

The result put Poole Town in the driving seat to take a third consecutive crown and with work under way to upgrade Tatnam to Southern League standard, Dolphins could be set to move up to step four.

That would open up the Wessex League title race next season but Kemp is staying cool on his team’s chances of featuring in the battle for silverware.

He told the Echo: “I’m not going to make any predictions.

“Consistency is still a huge factor regarding us but I would love to keep everyone together next season.

“It is a massive achievement to finish where we do without a budget. I wouldn’t say we were championship contenders.”

Discussing the victory over Winchester, which lifted Priory into the top six, Kemp added: “In the first half, we were by far the better side and could have been three or four up.

“We had beaten Bemerton away and drawn against Winchester and Poole, so it was certainly not a surprise to me.”
