TAFFY Richardson insists Poole Town were right to put their Wessex League title quest before county cup glory.

Dolphins’ hopes of a league, FA Vase and Dorset Senior Cup treble were ended after their weakened side lost 3-1 to Dorchester in the county cup semi-final last night.

Richardson, who skippered Wimborne to the treble 19 years ago, said: “I didn’t even consider doing the treble again.

“I want to win everything, but in the greater scheme of things the club has done the right thing.

“When we were at Wimborne we didn’t have a big squad.

“The same players played almost every time. There were few changes.

“We were without Lamin Dibba, Carl Poore, Carl Preston and Kevin Gill against Dorchester, while Dave Sturgess didn’t start and Dan Cann was on the bench.

“Micky Hubbard played right-back, I was centre-half after Michael Walker was injured, while Dorchester played nine first-teamers.”

Richardson, whose side netted through Tom Jeffes, added: “If we had our full strength side out, we’d have been a match for them.

“No disrespect to Dorchester or the Dorset Senior Cup, but we need to get out of the Wessex League and Winchester City away tomorrow is a far more important game.”
