POOLE Town captain Carl Poore fired a warning to his side’s FA Vase rivals ahead of today’s quarter-final draw: We’ll take on anyone.

The skipper was speaking after Dolphins recovered from 2-0 down to stun competition favourites Spennymoor Town at Tatnam on Saturday.

Trailing to goals from Micky Rae and Stephen Capper, Tom Killick’s men staged a stirring comeback to book a place in the last eight.

Supersub Steve Smith scored with his first touch on 61 minutes before equalising just four minutes later. Dan Cann, provider of both Smith goals, then thumped home a dramatic late winner.

The victory put Poole within two rounds – and three matches – of a place in the showpiece final at the home of football on May 8.

Having helped knock out much-fancied Spennymoor, Poore said he was ready to take on any of the remaining teams in the next round.

When asked by the Echo if he had any preference ahead of this morning’s draw at Wembley, the experienced defender said: “I’m not fussed – anyone.

“A home game (would be nice) but we have knocked out the favourites, so bring on anyone. Theoretically, we should be favourites now.

“Spennymoor were favourites but it just showed that we were no mugs, either.

“We put in a great performance to come back from 2-0 down. It showed the character and bottle within the team.”

Poore added: “It would be a great occasion if we were to get to Wembley. We’re not thinking about that and we have still got to win a couple more games yet.

“We’ll take each game as it comes but, if we put in performances like we did on Saturday in every game, I think we’ll be there.”

Match-winner Cann admitted he fancied Dolphins’ chances after firing them through to the next stage. He also revealed that he was physically drained prior to summoning the energy to hit the late goal.

Cann said: “My calves blew up with about 20 minutes to go and I don’t even know how I hit the ball to be honest.

“The team has got a big heart – we know that and we can dig in when we need to.”

In the competition this season, Poole have enjoyed four consecutive home ties, seeing off Wellington 4-3, Wantage Town 3-2 and St Ives Town 3-2 prior to the victory over Spennymoor Town.

Prolific frontman Smith, the two-goal hero at Tatnam on Saturday, has scored in every round.

Dorset bookmakers Jem Racing rate Poole as 5-1 third favourites to win the Vase, behind holders Whitley Bay (2-1) and King’s Lynn (5-2). Others: Coalville Town 8-1, Leiston 8-1, Dunston UTS 10-1, Rye United 12-1, Torpoint Athletic 14-1.
