DARCY Ward could begin the defence of his world junior title on home territory at Wimborne Road.

Castle Cover Pirates’ star has to qualify for the four-meeting final first.

But if he does, he will be aiming to get his challenge to become the first three-time under-21 champion off to a winning start in the first leg at Wimborne Road on Sunday, July 24.

It will be the first time an FIM event has been staged at Poole since the World Cup final in 2004.

Pirates new boy Dennis Andersson will also be gunning to qualify, along with Danish youngster Michael Jepsen Jensen.

Jepsen Jensen tore up the Polish League with Torun last season and his anticipated first appearance at Poole prompted Wimborne Road supremo Matt Ford to reveal the teenager is on standby to answer any SOS Pirates may have.

Ford said: “Michael and his family stayed with me last year when we first held talks.

“But it was felt then his racing commmitments abroad were just too great for him to take up a full British programme in 2011.

“However, I do have a very close working relationship with Michael and his father Jan, and there is a very good possibility people will see Michael in Poole colours in the not too distant future.

“Whether that will be in 2011 I’m not entirely sure, but Jan has given me his word that should we need Michael for an emergency or for a short time, they would jump at the opportunity.

“His average in Poland is two and a half more than Darcy's. He’s an incredible talent.”

Jepsen Jensen, 19 on February 18, will line up in the Polish, Danish and Swedish leagues.

He also hopes to take the world under-21 championship and Grand Prix qualifiers by storm.

Ford added: “I know when Michael comes to England it will be to Poole.

“We just need to bide our time. But if it happens this year he'll be on a five-point average.”

Previewing the world under-21 final first leg at Poole in July, Ford said: “It will be the perfect opportunity to see the world’s top young racers in action.

“As I understand it, there will be no other speedway in the country that day, so we’ll be looking to operate an advanced ticket sales system.

“Hopefully we’ll be in a position to announce more of that in due course.

“The timing of the event couldn’t be better for us really. It coincides with the start of the school summer holidays.

“And we’re considering holding an event with an international flavour the previous Wednesday to kick-off what we feel could be a great time to holiday at Poole.

“At this stage we’re still awaiting the green light for the Wednesday meeting but Poole could well be the place to base yourself if you are a speedway-loving holidaymaker.”
