Cherries: Brown's lucky to escape ref's full wrath

CHERRIES skipper Jason Pearce was fortunate to escape a serious facial injury after being the victim of a dreadful lunge from Michael Brown in last night’s pre-season friendly.

The incident occurred when the Pompey hard man retaliated after Pearce had sent him sprawling with a shuddering – but fair – challenge early in the second half.

Brown reacted angrily by launching himself at Pearce and appeared to catch the Cherries skipper full in the face with his studs. Pearce went down clutching his face and required treatment from Cherries physio Steve Hard.

Much to the annoyance of a number of Cherries supporters, referee James Linnington, following consultation with his assistant, chose only to book Brown.

The flashpoint failed to overshadow another impressive display from Eddie Howe’s men, with only Marc Wilson’s second-half penalty separating the League One newcomers from the Championship outfit.

Pompey striker David Nugent carved out the first shooting chance after 17 minutes, his curling effort from 20 yards just clearing the crossbar.

Marlon Pack also took aim for the visitors with his long-range strike safely smothered by Cherries goalkeeper Shwan Jalal.

Jalal pulled off a smart reaction save after Tommy Smith had let fly midway through the first half, the goalkeeper pushing his wickedly swerving shot over the top.

Cherries enjoyed plenty of possession during the early stages of the first half, although found scoring opportunities hard to come by against a well organised Pompey rearguard.

Their first noteworthy chance fell to Anton Robinson, but the midfielder’s crisp snapshot was blocked by Pompey midfielder Nadir Ciftci.

However, Howe’s men fashioned the clearest opportunity of the game after 34 minutes when Marc Pugh’s silky skills took him into the Pompey 18-yard box.

And after the tricky winger had turned his marker, he unleashed a low, right-foot drive which struck the base of Jamie Ashdown’s post.

Smith, picked out by Wilson’s crossfield pass, danced along the 18-yard box before dragging his shot wide of the target.

Early in the second half, Brown was fortunate to escape with a booking after reacting following a full-blooded tackle from Pearce.

The Pompey man petulantly kicked out at Pearce following the challenge, with the Cherries skipper requiring treatment after going down clutching his face.

Although referee Linnington failed to spot the incident, the official inexplicably showed Brown only a yellow card after consulting his assistant. Subsequently, Brown’s every touch was met with a chorus of boos from the Dean Court fans.

Brett Pitman twice went close to breaking the deadlock, his first effort saved by Ashdown, his second flashing inches past the upright.

And as Cherries began to assert, interval substitute Josh McQuoid arrived to scoop an inch-perfect centre from Bradbury over the crossbar.

Nugent’s 20-yarder was tipped over by Jalal before Pompey opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 68 minutes.

Referee Linnington was somewhat more eagle-eyed than he had been when Brown had caught Pearce, the official spotting a shirt tug by Marvin Bartley on Pack.

Although the Cherries midfielder tried to protest his innocence, Wilson showed no mercy from the spot, beating Jalal with a powerful strike from 12 yards.

Pitman was booked for a poor tackle on Brown before Pearce received a lecture from referee Linnington after also upending the Pompey midfielder.

And in the closing stages, Cherries substitute Jayden Stockley went close to grabbing what would have been a deserved equaliser.

Cherries: Jalal, Bradbury (Purches, 76), Pearce, Cooper, Wiggins (Cummings, 76), Feeney, Robinson, Arter (McQuoid, h-t), Bartley, Pugh, Pitman (Stockley, 83).

Booked: Pitman.

Portsmouth: Ashdown, Mullins, Ward (Martin, 75), Brown, Pack, Hughes, Ritchie, Wilson, Smith, Nugent (Ryan, 83), Ciftci (Gregory, 65).

Booked: Brown.

Referee: James Linnington (Isle of Wight, Hampshire).

Weak refereeing, even in a "Friendly" a foul like Brown's should have been punished severely. But the game demonstrated how diificult it will be to win games without our injured strikers and it looks as if we will be without them for the first 2/3 weeks of the Season. On the positive side, the rest of the team is looking good. . .

Poor ref's, a feature seen far too often of late, something just has to be changed, if they don't bring in technology for this kind of stuff, even in a friendly then they must be a bunch of muppets that run this game. I can't understand how any player would even wish to do that to a fellow pro, and as it's not a red card it won't be looked at. The rules of the game as so out of date it's amazing we have a game at all.

The one thing I have not seen mentioned regarding friendlies, is the attendances, have they been very good???

Players never used to get booked in friendlies, the ref just indicated they should be substituted. This season i have seen 2 players booked.

why the change?

When is a friendly not a friendly? When Richard Hughes is in the opposing team!!! I thought friendlies were meant to be competitive but not to the point where players got badly injured. Some of the crunching tackles that went in last night left a great deal of room for improvement. As for the football, I know which team manager need to worry this team and that isn’t EH!

Always seems to be a bit of bad blood between us, I remember years ago when that thug Mick Tait broke Robbie Savages leg in a so called friendly, the crack could be heard all round Dean Court.

Another example of a poor player who lacks talent but makes up for it in sheer thuggery!!!

another good showing from Eddies team, anyone at the match to just watch not supporting any of the teams would have found it difficult to pick out which one was in the higher league. Portsmouth took every opportunity to kick lumps out of the Cherries and weak refereeing meant that someone could have been badly injured in this 'friendly'. In answer to afcbpetes question the friend;ies appart from Spurs have been really BADLY attended, it is a good job that the opposition have brought a lot of supporters or else we would be down to just over a 1000 a match. As I have said before I just do not know what our so called supporters want, I realise that it costs to bring a family but even if everyone had only been at 2 gammes at least the ground would have not looked so empty. Hope it improves for the league, notice the glory hunters are all going to be at Southampton. Looks like we will be able to consolidate our possition in the new league, Pugh and Arter are two gems.

It was a pleasure to watch last night's match and AFCB were impressive against a good Portsmouth team.

Today I have spent the morning at the AFCB Open Training session and its been lovely, well attended. So many fans and families were obviously enjoying seeing the skills and meeting the players, the kids were collecting autographs and having their pictures taken with the players. Many from the club were there to explain their roles and Eddie and Jason made it very interesting.
This is the true meaning of a Community Club...well done to everyone at Dean Court for a brilliant idea for young and old - well put into practice.

Does anybody else beside myself believe that we may need a striker or two in on loan in view of injuries to Lovell, Fletcher and Symes.

We may be playing well but I do not feel that we are stong enough up front with just Pitman on his own???

Regards

Quite agree Scottie190... I thought there would be a much larger crowd last night ( seemed like there were more people at Canford for the Hamworthy game). Those who did attend saw a very slick and confident Bmth side. Pugh and Arter put in an exceptional performance and so did Josh when he came on towards the end. No-one had a bad game although the defence was a it sloppy at times. Its good that the biggest problem facing the manager this season is choosing a starting eleven... UTCIAD

I remember that Savage was never the same player again as fo Tait what a horrible excuse for a Human being makes Brown look like a pussycat.

I was one of the few who attended last night - Brown's vicious foul should have been a straight red friendly or no friendly.

Bournemouth looked the stronger side and although Portsmouth are a league above this certainly was not apparent on the pitch last night.

One thing I must say of the Pompey is that their supporters are excellent, they providing the noise and chanting the whole match, whereas there were hardly enough Bournemouth supporters to fill up one stand.

Also went this morning, maybe the club could do more of these during half-terms etc. with a bit of thought could produce some extra revenue for the club. One thing nagging me is Brett`s relutance(refusal)to answer the question over his thoughts for our season ,was it just he was in an icebath or am I reading more into it than there might be.
Changing subject, season tickets;have been available since Wednesday,BUT anyone using the direct debit/instalment method will be inconvenienced. These cards will not be released by the club until October when all instalments have been paid.Meanwhile anyone paying by this method will be required to go to the ground and collect match tickets for Aug and Sep month by month once payment has cleared, those tickets not even being sent out by post. This I understand is because last season(s)people cancelled their direct debit once they received their cards(normally after 3 or 4 payments)and then used their st card for the entire season.

Could not believe the price to get in. What a rip off the prices are this season. I think it will effect crowds sadly.
