HARRY Arter capped a fine individual display with his first goal for Cherries as Eddie Howe’s men staged a thrilling late fight-back against Derby last night.

The gifted 20-year-old, a summer signing from non-league Woking, caught the eye with a performance full of promise and endeavour as Cherries battled back from 3-1 down.

Arter’s 85th-minute strike made it 3-2 before Warren Cummings levelled with a thunderous drive, the final kick of an entertaining contest.

Earlier, goals from Kris Commons and Paul Green had given the Rams a 2-0 lead before Brett Pitman’s penalty reduced the arrears on the stroke of half-time.

And after James Bailey’s effort had restored Derby’s two-goal lead, an Arter-inspired late show earned Cherries a deserved share of the spoils.

Green went close to drawing first blood for the visitors when his clipped effort from the edge of the box just cleared the crossbar.

Cherries responded when Danny Hollands had to stretch to meet a Lee Bradbury centre, the midfielder poking narrowly wide.

County took the lead in the 12th minute when dead-ball specialist Commons despatched a majestic free kick past Shwan Jalal.

The Cherries goalkeeper could do little to prevent Commons’s delightful left-foot strike arrowing into the top corner of the net from 20 yards.

Pitman, who was linked with the Rams last season, tried his luck from distance after 20 minutes, only to see his effort flash past the post.

Arter, a 22nd-minute substitute for Joe Partington, earned a rare pre-season booking for clattering County’s makeshift defender Rob Hulse.

Derby doubled their lead after 37 minutes when Green’s fierce drive appeared to take a |deflection before fizzing past Jalal.

Cherries went close to halving the deficit when Marc Pugh burst clear down the left flank before his strike cannoned off Hulse and on to the crossbar.

Pitman reduced the arrears with a finely-taken penalty on the stroke of half-time after Arter had been felled by Dean Moxey.

The striker, on target in last week’s win at Poole, found the bottom corner after sending Rams goalkeeper Stephen Bywater the wrong way.

Pugh was denied an equaliser at the start of the second half when Bywater acrobatically turned his fierce strike around the post. And the former Hereford man was also in the thick of the action as Cherries went close to levelling minutes later.

Bywater pushed Pugh’s initial shot on to the base of the post before Bradbury arrived to roll the loose ball along the goalline and straight back into the goalkeeper’s hands.

Derby extended their lead after 68 minutes when Bailey picked his spot low to Jalal’s right with a well-struck left-foot effort.

County’s substitute goalkeeper Saul Deeney then pulled off a smart save to keep out Arter’s near post effort after 73 minutes.

However, the former Woking man finally got his reward for another eye-catching performance when he coolly netted the rebound after Jayden Stockley’s header had been saved by Deeney.

And with the last kick of the game, Cummings stepped forward to unleash an unstoppable left-foot drive that whistled past Deeney to make it 3-3.
