CHERRIES are running the rule over Luke Webb, the teenage son of former England star Neil Webb.

The 19-year-old midfield playmaker has been training with Sean O'Driscoll's squad this week and could feature in their opening pre-season friendly at Havant and Waterlooville on Saturday.

Formerly on Arsenal's books having progressed through the ranks at Highbury, Webb spent last season at Coventry but did not feature in the Championship for the Sky Blues.

His father made his debut for Reading aged just 16 and went on to win 26 caps for his country. Manchester United paid Nottingham Forest £1.5m for him in 1989, while he also later managed non-league Weymouth.

Cherries assistant manager Richard O'Kelly told the Daily Echo: "Luke is a six-footer who can play anywhere across the middle of the park and is a good athlete.

"We saw him on five or six occasions last season and he did quite well in a very young Coventry reserve side. He's been made available so we thought we would get him in to have a look."

Asked whether he felt the youngster had to shoulder added pressure because of his father, O'Kelly replied: "I've come across people in the past who are a little bit like that but Luke doesn't seem affected in that way.

"He's a lovely lad and the sort of person you take to straight away. He's very dedicated and does things the right was. He's intelligent and asks questions at the right time. He's been first class since he's been here."

Entry to Havant and Waterlooville's Westleigh Park will cost £10 for adults and £5 for concessions and the match kicks off at 2pm.
