New Milton’s Matt Vineer is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Luke Donald after writing a new chapter in his American college record books.

The 19-year-old, a one-handicapper at Barton-on-Sea, became only the second student in history from Southeast Community College to claim a top-20 place at the prestigious Nationals.

Vineer finished 19th in a competitive field of 132 and gained all-American honours after shooting an impressive four-round total of 296 at Palm Valley Golf Club in Phoenix.

And the teenager, who honed his game in the wind and rain at Barton, achieved the feat playing in the searing 100-degree heat of Arizona in all four rounds.

Vineer attended Arnewood School and then Brockenhurst College before taking up an invitation to enrol on a four-year golf scholarship in Nebraska two years ago.

He is keen to follow a path trodden by Englishman Donald who graduated from Northwestern University in America to become one of the world’s leading players.

However, Vineer’s family in New Milton are looking for sponsors to help him through the final two years of his studies as he bids to realise his dream.

Any individuals or companies who could help, either financially or by supplying golf equipment, are asked to contact father Rob Vineer on 01425 619668 or 07876 572704.
