BOSS Joe Roach conceded his players had been victims of their own downfall as Cherries suffered an almighty hangover following their midweek heroics in the FA Youth Cup.

Roach’s charges headed to Wiltshire fresh from their cup drubbing of AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday, while the Robins were licking their wounds after bowing out of the competition to Leyton Orient.

However, it was a case of after the Lord Mayor’s Show for Cherries as their South West Conference rivals condemned them to a third league defeat of the season at their Liddington training ground.

Will Evans’s 17th-minute opener paved the way for victory before Abdul Said’s double and strikes from Seb Broomfield and Billy Bodin stunned Cherries during a second-half goal blitz.

Roach told the Daily Echo: “We started well and created a few chances in the first 20 minutes before they scored from a free kick.

“We kept trying to play but kept giving away the ball. As a consequence, we didn’t get back quickly enough and allowed them to keep counter-attacking.

“Three of the four goals in the second half were poor and I felt sorry for our defence because we didn’t hold up the ball well enough or give their goalkeeper enough problems.

“We should and could have reacted better to the state of the game. We did okay in the last 20 minutes but Swindon’s finishing was as clinical as ours had been against Wimbledon.”

Cherries: Murphy, Annetts, Oldring, Strugnell, Holmes, Magookin (Bell, 67), Parsons (Strong, 74), Burbidge, Kemble (Hester, 50), Ings, Stockley.

• Cherries are still waiting to finalise a date for their FA Youth Cup third round trip to Bolton Wanderers.
