HAMWORTHY United boss Simon Browne was the toast of one of his former clubs - and the scourge of one of his old team-mates following their 1-1 draw at Bemerton Heath Harlequins last night.

Carl Mutch's late header cancelled out Joe Sanger's first-half opener to earn the improving Hammers an unexpected point against the high-flying Wiltshire outfit.

The result prevented the hosts from leapfrogging Browne's former club Poole Town as the Hammers also denied victory to his ex-Salisbury team-mate and Harlequins boss Ian Chalk.

Browne said: "I spoke to Chalky afterwards and he felt it was two points dropped. I just hope some of my friends at Poole will be saying nice things about us for keeping them in second!

"It was a good test for us and it shows how far we have come that we got an away point against one of the sides in the top three, "They had the lion's share of the chances and there were times when they put us under a fair amount of pressure. But we stood firm and it was about time we got something for our hard work and effort."

Mutch headed home Larbi Mekchiche's cross six minutes from time before Hammers hero Steve Shergold capped a fine individual display when he saved from Joe Fisher in the dying seconds.

Hammers: Shergold, Yelland, Llewelyn, Horlock, R Jackson, Cannie, Dancer (Toghill, 65), Crow, Merritt, Mutch, Mekchiche. Unused subs: Browne, Vavrecka, Roberts (g/k).
